CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Lillian

It was only as I was on my way home that it registered what Jared was trying to say. Oliver made it clear last week when he spoke of their contingency plan. I just hadn’t understood what it really meant. He didn’t trust my information. He was helping me because he liked me. Not because he trusted or respected me. My spine bristled at that.

He first said he wanted a second date. Then as we got busy planning the mission, work took priority. I assumed it was because he respected me and didn’t want to mix business with pleasure. Maybe he even believed that. Then why ask me out now?

Did he decide that with the mission virtually all planned out and all that was left was actual implementation, we could have fun? Did he want to get in there before we had to part ways? Maybe I needed to have a conversation with him before things went further between us. If I didn’t like what he had to say, then we needed to pump the breaks and stick to the mission only. What if all he wanted was a one-and-done?

That knowledge spoke volumes. Was I just fun for a short fling? Without trust and respect Oliver and I couldn’t be much more. The thought didn’t sit well with me. He had reservations, of course he did. I expected that. I lived on the other side of the country. Not that I had much to go back to. Still, I was not going to up and move for a guy. Especially not one who wasn’t sure what he wanted.

I pulled into the driveway a little after five-thirty. Jess was standing in the doorway as a dark blue Mercedes drove away from the front of the house. I hadn’t seen her much. I had only been staying a few weeks and Jessica had either been with her man or working when I was around. Still, in the little time I had spent around the young police officer, I liked her. A little naïve maybe, but being a beat cop would fix that. Quickly.

I climbed out of my car and smiled at her. “Is that your mystery man?”

“It’s no mystery. He just hasn’t been around a lot lately.” She scrunched her nose. “He’s an accountant and he says things have been crazy lately. He left work early to come see me since we hadn’t seen much of each other recently. Apparently, everything will be back to normal now that things have settled down at the office.”

It wasn’t tax season, but I didn’t know much about how accountants work. “Well at least one of us is getting lucky.”

Jess giggled. “What? Your hot sailor playing hard to get?”

I winced. I didn’t think Oliver was playing at anything. He was actually hard to get. “Uhm. Yeah. I mean, I’m not exactly throwing myself at him either. But other than some really hot kisses and some very appropriate touches, nothing’s happening.”

Jess pouted her lips and cocked her head to the side.
